Hi Friends! I hope you had a nice weekend! I definitely did!
It’s been freeezing and icy and yuck, so I haven’t been able to ride my bike outside in two weeks, but despite being stuck inside, I haven’t gone stir crazy quite yet.
I am, however, starting to really feel the pressure of training for the Paris Marathon and Dirty Kanza 200 at the same time. Patience, Grasshopper. One big race at a time….. I’ll never learn.
But I am finding all of the pre-race info for Paris pretty darn hilarious. Their English translations are just so dang proper:
“… interval training can allow spectacular progression”
“Warm up meticulously”
“Long outings are a number one priority!”
Cracks me up. I also thought it would be a good idea to try and learn some French before our trip (a little less than 2 months to go)!
I am HORRIBLE at French. I pass all the matching and typing, but I fail so hard at the speaking portions. I just can. not. speak French. I don’t understand the accent at all. I can pass some levels by just mumbling loud at my phone. I’m going to pretend to be deaf when we travel over there. I know my ABCs and swear words in ASL, so that should be good enough.
Speaking of swear words, they came in handy on Monday night when our dinner just randomly exploded in the oven. Apparently you are never to put Pyrex in the oven without water in the bottom. You also can only put dishes into a pre-heated oven. My bad.
Since our food was ruined on Monday (unless you like a light dusting of glass shards), I thought I would surprise Paul and re-buy the twice-baked potatoes and crab stuffed mushrooms. He thought the same thing, so we ended up with the same meal twice. Makes me sick how cute we are 😛
I also got cake at work on Friday for a co-worker’s last day. 171 days until Shark Week. I can’t stop laughing every time I see this photo. Looks like a memorial to a beloved dead barracuda.
Saturday I made the epic mistake of going to BodyPump for the first time in what might literally be forever. I was totally owned by the old guy in Hollister khaki shorts next to me.
However, the mistake was going immediately before what was supposed to be my long run. Soreness was almost instant (thought a million billion times worse on Sunday). I basically needed a walker to eek out the couple miles that I ran. Whoops. Lesson learned.
Then in my post-run delirium, I thought that a 5lb bag of crawfish from the freezer section of the Platte City, MO Price Chopper would be a wonderful dinner.
Fun to look at, tasteless to eat.
At least the cats enjoyed themselves.
And now it is that time of the week again where I talk about riding my bike! I was supposed to do 70 miles (which is about 5 hours on the trainer), but I ended up riding for ‘only’ 3 hours. I did 3 hours last Sunday too, but I felt so much less sore sitting on the saddle this time. Between this and my BodyPump experiment from Saturday, my poor quads have basically disowned me.
Here’s the ‘Pain Cave’ set-up I have going. I put my laptop with TrainerRoad on that chair that is directly in front of the bike. (Paul’s bike is on the right and he uses the desktop).
I won’t be riding this bike for Dirty Kanza… but it is a PAIN to remove the bike from the trainer all the time. I try to avoid using my aerobars as much as possible since my gravel bike won’t have them.
My secret weapons for long rides. I always always always start with Chamois Butt’r, but Noxzema is the perfect mid-ride ‘refresher’. Kinda tingly. Much cheaper than Butt’r. I had a mini 3oz travel size tub in my special needs bag at Ironman.
Long trainer rides during the winter are also when I use up all the random trial sizes and samples that I’ve gathered during race season. I like Gu Chomps a lot, but I have a huge box of expired ones (so far they are still good despite expiring Jan 2014). I also really really like the PowerBar Cola gel shots, but they are a pain in the butt to carry on the run.
I used to put them in ziploc baggies and loop them through my Fuelbet. I looked like an idiot. I’m glad I finally warmed up to using gels. Here’s me with my baggies at Big Sur in 2012.
The rest of the weekend involved puzzling. And Netflix.
Crossing my fingers for a warmer week! Go away snow!
What are your goals for the week?
1. Go to BodyPump once (I need strength training in my life. Just not immediately before long runs).
2. Ride my bike 3 times during the week. Thinking of trying out a Spin class at YMCA for some variety from my basement.
3. Finish the book I’m reading: Speaking From Among the Bones
